As Maxwell himself put it, "We can scarcely avoid the inference

that light consists in the transverse undulations of the same medium

which is the cause of electric and magnatic phenomena."

由光速與他所算出的傳播速度相同，雖然不是光等於電磁波的直接證據
但由力學波的知識告訴我們，至少他們傳遞能量的方式是使用同一種介質。
