舉一個例子, 考慮一個材料的permittivity tensor

對角化(如果可以對角化)後, 其對應之eigenvalue

可以關連到refractive indices

含有real part的indices對應到的是phase factor

含有imaginary part的indices對應到的是attenuation

The eigenvalues of Hermitian operator are real.

So the medium is loss-free.
