The answer depends upon the degree of difficulty (or complexity) for a
physical problem you are investigating. Take Einstein for example. Einstein,
in 1905, only made modest use of math to formulate his theory of special
relativity. His physical insight (or, equivalently, deep intuition or
sense) was a key factor for his success. However, in order to formulate
his theory of the general relativity, his deep physical insight was not
enough. He needed some advanced math (namely, differential geometry and
tensor calculus) for which he got help from his undergrad classmate,
Marcel Grossmann. In fact, Einstein wielded his math tools with some
clumsiness. Perhaps, it could be the reason why it took him ten years to
formulate the theory of general relativity. If Einstein's math ability had
been as good as Hilbert's, the duration of ten years could have been shorter.
No wonder, Kip Thorne said that "with the quest to understand the laws of
physics becoming more and more mathematical as the years after 1915 passed,
Einstein became less and less the dominant figure he had been".
Nevertheless, his unique physical intuition allowed him to identify
three essential ingredients on which general relativity is based.
