Kobe Bryant will not play tonight when the Lakers open their season against
the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center.

Bryant, who did not play at all in the exhibition season following
arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-July, will also sit out Wednesday's game
against the Golden State Warriors in Oakland.

 "It's a little sore," said Bryant of his knee. "We've had a good three and
half months [of rehabilitation] and we don't want to throw it all away."

Bryant said he made the decision after putting his ailing knee through a
workout earlier today.

"It's going to be rough," he said of his decision to sit Tuesday's opener.
"Considering who we play, it might get to me."
The Suns ended the Lakers' season last year in the first round of the
playoffs.

Bryant said he was optimistic he would return for the Lakers' third game,
Friday night at home against the Seattle Supersonics.

Sasha Vujacic will take Bryant's spot in the lineup tonight.
