The girl from Ipanema

一首歌可以在無意中改變人的一生，你相信嗎？就有這麼一
首歌無心插柳柳成蔭地改變了兩位女性的一生。

巴西作曲家Antonio Carlos Jobim和吉他手Joao Gilberto在
1950年代末聽到來自美國的酷派爵士樂(Cool Jazz)，他們將
酷派爵士的特色與巴西當地的森巴(Samba)音樂結合，產生了
一種柔和、浪漫的新型態音樂-- "Bossa Nova(可譯為new way)"，
並在巴西開始受到歡迎。

在巴西的首都里約熱內盧(Rio de Janeiro)有一處叫做Ipanema 
的海灘，Jobim就住在這一帶；Jobim和一位作詞家Vinicius de Moraes
常耗在當地Rua Montenegro(街名，應該是「黑山街」之意)一
家名叫"Veloso"的酒吧。他們每天都會看到一位美麗的高中女
孩在放學時從酒吧前經過，因而激發了兩人的靈感而寫出了一
首歌叫"Garota de Ipanema"，翻成英文就是"The girl from Ipanema"。
這位十八歲的女孩名叫Heloisa Pinheiro，那時是1962年。這
首歌寫出了男生看到令人驚豔的美女從眼前走過的遐想，看了
它的歌詞的話，我想可能有不少男生會有會心一笑。

1962年美國薩克斯風手Stan Getz與Charlie Byrd灌錄了一張
"Jazz Samba"專輯，獲致了絕佳的成績；本專輯裡的歌曲就是
Jobim的作品。因此1963年Stan Getz和Jobim、Joao Gilberto
又共同錄製了一張"Getz/Gilberto"的Bossa Nova專輯。當時
製作人Creed Taylor認為The girl from Ipanema這首歌應該
具有暢銷的潛力，不過應該加入英語的歌詞以增加賣點；可是
Joao Gilberto只會葡萄牙語而不諳英語，結果不知怎麼的Stan Getz
想到找Joao Gilberto的太太Astrud Gilberto來唱。Astrud
當時24歲，原本只是陪同先生來紐約當他的翻譯和照顧他的起
居，在這之前從來未曾有職業演唱經驗；因此Joao Gilberto和
Jobim大表反對，只有Stan Getz堅持認為這是個好主意，於是
Joao Gilberto把他太太從下榻的旅館找來錄音室，告訴他太太
說他「要給她一個驚喜！」

Astrud馬上在錄音室唱了The girl from Ipanema，當他們聽了
錄音成果之後，Stan Getz告訴Astrud說：「那首歌會讓妳大紅
大紫。(That song is gonna make you very famous.)」而且
他們還讓她的歌聲加入其他三首歌。整張專輯錄音只花了兩天
的時間，也就是說Astrud沒有什麼練習就被趕鴨子上架了。結
果Stan Getz的預感完全應驗了，Asturd這個臨時加入的菜鳥讓
這首歌瘋狂暢銷；不僅打進Billboard排行榜前五名達十二週之
久，最高名次還到第二名，並且在排行榜盤旋96週。這個專輯近
四十年來持續銷售了數百萬張；的我們可以說Astrud參與的這
首The girl from Ipanema是後來Bassa Nova風靡全球的引爆點。
影響所及，日本作家村上春樹還曾為這首歌寫了一篇短篇小說：
「1963/1982的伊帕內瑪女孩」。

用Astrud自然不做作、略帶生澀稚氣和略帶葡萄牙語腔的歌聲來
唱The Girl From Ipanema可說是是絕佳的安排，表現出歌詞裡一
種淡淡的哀愁和南美風情。她的歌聲大受歡迎(甚至有人形容為
"Merlot"一般的歌聲-註)，因此陸續又錄製了許多專輯，也參加
電影演出；她甚至於比她的老公還紅，成為世界最知名的巴西樂
手之一，甚至可以說她像巴西的音樂大使，將Bossa Nova這種源
自巴西的音樂傳播到世界各地。她至今仍活躍於樂壇(她最近才
又出了新專輯)。

由於The Girl From Ipanema紅遍全世界，這首歌曲有關的人物地
方也大出鋒頭。Rua Montenegro現在叫"Rua Vinicius de Moraes"
；當年那家酒吧則改名叫A Garuta de Ipanema，這裡已成為里約
熱內盧的重要觀光景點。不過最重要的是靈感來源的Heloisa Pinheiro
女士(常被暱稱為Helo)；她莫名其妙地成為大名人，全因為她的
天生麗質。Jobim後來在接受國家地理雜誌採訪時回想：「她擁有
長長的金髮、碧綠的眼睛和美妙的身材，這麼說好了：她的一切都
恰到好處．．．(she had everything in the right place....)」
據她本人所說，Jobim和de Moraes都曾追求她，不過後來都變成好
朋友，Jobim甚至是她結婚時的伴郎。

Pinheiro女士後來也從事演藝事業；現在雖然年近六十，據說依然美
麗。不過去年她有一件麻煩事：她最近開了一家珠寶店，店名就叫
"The girl from Ipanema"，這對她而言是自然不過的，畢竟她就是
這個女孩和這首歌的靈感來源；但是這首歌兩位創作人的繼承人
(Jobim和de Moraes都已過世)可不這麼認為。他們主張Pinheiro女士
只是巧合地被當作寫歌的題材，並不足以讓她有權使用這首歌的名字。
2001年8月Pinheiro女士在被控侵權的官司中敗訴，被要求更改店名以
及從店裡移除Pinheiro女士與Jobim、de Moraes的合影照片，並且原告
還要求法庭判處Pinheiro女士如果不依上述判決執行的話，每天要罰款。

雖然她輸了官司，不過巴西的民眾還是都站在她這邊。Pinheiro女士說
如果Jobim和de Moraes還在世的話，他們絕對不會控告她的。這個我相
信。如果Jobim和de Moraes看到他們兩個的繼承人居然為這種問題去控
告Pinheiro女士，應該會覺得很難過吧！

撇開這些紛紛擾擾的世事不談，聆聽音響播放出來的The Girl From Ipanema，
四十年來歌裡的她絲毫未曾變老，永遠苗條的身材、曬黑的皮膚、年輕
又美麗，依然能激起我們的遐想。如同村上春樹寫的：「她永遠是十八
歲，又冷又溫柔的伊帕內瑪女孩。．．．如今依然繼續走在灼熱的沙灘
上，直到最後一張唱片磨平為止，她會永遠不停地繼續走著。」


(註：Merlot是原產於法國波爾多的紅葡萄品種，現在也廣泛地被種植在全
 世界各地的葡萄酒產區。用Merlot釀的紅酒，一般的特色是柔順圓潤、富
 於果香，口感不會太強勁，因此讓人易於接受。)
