Re: “Radical change in doctor training needed”

Dear faculty,
        Economic doldrums along with the faulty medical care system
have adversely affected medical education.  While rigorous “Faculty
 Development” programs are being restructured, challenges and
resistances are anticipated.  In addition, trainings for medical
students, residents and fellows should also expect the similar
endeavors.  In the United States, “after two decades of dizzying
change in the health care system, hospitals’ quick tempo, and ....
keep medical students from seeing the full picture of medical care,
 doctors under financial pressure have less time to teach, and no
student can master the mushrooming amount of knowledge in every
specialty”.  The article appeared in the recent issue of Boston
 Globe is of great interest to me, and I would very much like to
share with you.  After you have read it, I encourage you to bring
it up for discussion in your departmental meetings.  Hopefully,
creative thoughts as to how to meet the challenges in carrying
out our educational mission can be generated.  The article also
reports that “Harvard is launching the first rethinking of its
medical curriculum in 20 years” and Harvard is about to lead
what they believe to be “the most sweeping changes in American
medical education since 1910....”.  The full article is available
